A serious evaluation of the results depends essentially on two factors:
1.) How are the test tasks constructed.
The measurement of different abilities happens mostly by the fact that the examinee is to solve different tasks. These should fulfil certain conditions. The results do ride on the tasks!
How are they to be?
Can one find out how are the mathematical abilities of an examinee asking the items like: 2+2, 1+3, 4-2, etc., ? For sure, only a little. Just the same with the items: ∫(sin x)dx , ∫(cos x2)dx, etc.
Suitable tasks are those representing all levels of difficulty of the subject!
2.) Which empirical values has the evaluator on his disposal for this tasks.
Provided that the test tasks fulfil the requirements discussed under point 1. Then a serious evaluation is possible only, if the evaluator has the result values (=norms) of a larger comparable group of test persons. Then he or she can compare the individual with the group in a meaningful way.
